EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) refers to study courses provided in non-English speaking institutions. The content of Delivery, teacher-student interaction, learning and academic support teaching materials, learning achievement display and evaluation are all in English.
(1) English courses that focus on language learning rather than professional subject content should not be listed as EMI courses, but ESL/EFL (English as a Second/Foreign Language), EAP (English for Academic Purposes) or ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses should be taken seriously, and English teachers are an important support in promoting EMI courses. In other words, when universities promote EMI-related projects, they should pay attention to English courses and English teachers.
(2) For EMI courses, teaching content, teacher-student interaction, presentation of student learning outcomes (such as oral presentations or reports) and assessment must be conducted in English.
(3) Interactions between students can be conducted in Chinese under certain circumstances. For example, Chinese may be used briefly during group discussions to facilitate creative thinking and brainstorming. However, students still need to present their discussion results in English, and when students' English skills improve or they choose more EMI courses, students should be encouraged to use English more often in class discussions.
(4) High-quality EMI courses should encourage students to speak and write in English as much as possible.
